Chapter Four
Sidney, Nebraska
Isabel is still very shaken from Liz’s previous premonition, and, like her brother, she is having seconds thoughts about separating from the group. But since the tickets have been bought and the plan set, she and Kyle hug their friends. After Liz and Kyle part, Liz tells him he should watch out for the woman in blue polyester who will bug him on the trip, and all the teens laugh at her premonition joke.
The Colorado/Utah Border
Max is driving the van and Liz is sitting beside him with the radio turned up too loud to talk. Maria and Michael have pulled closed the privacy curtain at the back of the van, and Max wonders if they are fighting or doing something more pleasant.
As they approach Utah, Max is forced to interrupt Michael and Maria’s privacy. He reminds his best friend that he is forbidden to enter Utah until his 21st birthday, a ruling made after he and Liz “robbed” a convenience store.
Grudgingly, Maria agrees to stop her conversation with Michael and the two sets of teens switch places. With Michael and Maria up front, Liz and Max take advantage of the time they have alone together for a deep passionate kiss. They both have flashes of their lives, the last image bringing back unpleasant memories of their deceased friend, Alex.
Deciding to try and get some needed sleep, Max and Liz stretch out in the back of the van. Max can’t help recalling the last time he had talked with Langley, however, and he is very worried. Langley had told him, “The more you embrace your alien side, the more you’re gonna lose.” And now Max faces the very real possibility of losing it all.
Mount Pleasant, Iowa
Sitting on the train, Kyle is bored out of his mind, and quite unhappy to learn that what Liz had told him was true. A woman in blue polyester, named Lucinda, had been talking to him nonstop for half an hour. Unable to take it anymore, Kyle decides to return to the suite Isabel and he had bought with alien altered money, despite the fact that he wanted to give her a little privacy for a shower.
Meanwhile, Isabel is drying herself off after a much needed shower, wincing in the pain of the taser bruises she had received the day before. Robed, she hears who she thinks is Kyle and steps out to greet him. Instead of seeing the familiar face of her human friend, however, she is confronted by a man, who must certainly be an alien. He points a never-before-seen weapon at Isabel and tells her that Kivar wants Vilandra back.
