Chapter Twelve
Above California
Kyle is sitting on the private jet Brody had chartered watching Isabel and Jesse snuggle up to each other while listening to Shelby share her view of this alien situation. To Shelby, Kyle is relieved to hear, the idea of Max and Isabel being aliens is not frightening. On the contrary, it opens up many doors for new opportunities and knowledge.
After a couple moments, Isabel leaves her husband’s side and politely interrupts Shelby and Kyle’s conversation. She suggests to Kyle that, using his psychic power, they attempt to open a forum for communication between them and Valenti.
Agreeing, Kyle, with the help of Isabel’s powers, concentrates on his dad and is able to open a dreamplane. Valenti is surprised to discover that his son has developed powers, but Kyle convinces him that he will be all right. Valenti wonders if he too will develop powers since Max healed him as well, but Kyle says it is unlikely since both Liz and Kyle were at a stage of puberty when Max had healed them and Valenti was not.
Agent Duff, while piloting the jet that she and Valenti are in, asks Valenti why he is so quiet. Valenti admits that he is having a conversation in his mind with his son, and Duff thinks he is nuts. Reaching out with his mind, Kyle widens the dreamplane to include Duff. Very much surprised, Duff watches in amazement as Isabel suggests to Kyle that he try and bring Max into the dreamplane as well.
Already fatigued and sweating from bringing Valenti, Isabel, Duff, and himself into the dreamplane, Kyle uses the last of his energy to call out to Max.
Meanwhile, back at Langley’s house, Kal is in his study making phone calls, Michael and Maria are alone together somewhere, and Max and Liz are lying together on the couch. Max looks down at Liz, sleeping fitfully with her head on his chest, and gently runs his hand across her head, sending a feeling of love and warmth into her mind.
Soon after, much to Max’s surprise, the world around him disappears and Max finds himself in the Roswellian desert with Isabel, Kyle, Valenti, and Agent Duff. After Kyle quickly explains what is going on, Max asks why Agent Duff is here and why he is here, to which Kyle responds, “Trying to answer the very same questions was why I went Buddhist.”
Shooting Kyle an annoyed glance, Isabel brought the conversation back on track. Isabel and Valenti informed Max that both groups were on their way to LA, and Max suggested that they all meet at Langley’s house to try and work out a plan. Then, suddenly remembering Liz’s premonition, Max questions Isabel about whether this is a smart course of action.
Before anymore discussion can take place, however, Isabel feels a ripping pain in her stomach and is ripped from the dreamplane. Kyle and Max look from the red spot where she had been to each other before the dreamwalk is broken.
Max finds himself once again in Langley’s house and wondering what had just happened to Isabel.
