Chapter Ten

Los Angeles

Driving recklessly through the winding streets of LA, Michael gets a little frustrated that he can’t find Langley’s house. After a couple wrong turns, Max informs the group that they are on the right street and soon after, the teens find themselves in front of Langley’s mansion. After being denied entrance by the man operating the entrance video, Michael uses his powers to blast the gate down and the teens enter Langley’s estate.

A man named Belton greets Max and his friends at the door, somewhat sourly, and tells them Kal will be down shortly. A moment later, Langley appears and demands to know what Max wants from him. Max and the group first want to go somewhere more private, but Langley waves them off. He tells them that Belton, after all, is a Krandal. Belton is an alien from one of the five planets still loyal to Zan.

With more pressing concerns than the discovery of yet another new type of alien race, Max tells Langley about their troubles with the FBI. Grudgingly, and with no literal choice, Kal agrees to help the teens, but insists that they shower first.

While Liz and Maria clean up in one of Langley’s gigantic bathrooms, they joke about Michael and Kal having a lot of things in common. This prompts Liz to become serious and remind Maria that if they are going to survive, they need to work together and trust one another. Whatever issues Maria has with Michael, and with her own lack of powers, need to be resolved.

After the group cleaned up, they all gathered in Langley’s study. After some discussion, Langley realized that the teens didn’t know anything about their origins. He showed them how to use the alien tracking device, the ken-teef, that Eddie had given them. Choosing Liz, the most psychic, he told her to concentrate on all the aliens in LA. A surprising number of dots appeared on the map. Then, Langley told her to focus on just the Antarians.

The teens, as well as Langley, were surprised to see six dots. One for Langley, one for Michael, and one for Max. They all stared at each other for a long moment before Max understood what it meant. The Dupes were in LA. And according to the map, one of them was in very real danger.
