Chapter Seventeen

Maria pulled the van over to the side of the road and parked. She, Isabel, Kyle, Shelby, and Jesse stepped out of the vehicle and stared in amazement at how many news media vans actually had shown up. Maria, thinking that this was just too convenient, suddenly thought she might know why. She told Isabel to activate the alien tracking device and see how many aliens were in the area. Isabel agreed and, sure enough, a number of the news reporters appeared to be from out of this world.

Rath and Ava had decided following Michael any further would be suicide. Ava continued mindwarping the agent into leading them to where Lonnie was being kept. As soon as the two dupes entered the room and saw what remained of Lonnie, Ava broke down in sobs and lost her concentration for the mindwarp. Rath, under the influence of pure rage and hatred, brutally killed the agent.

Rath said he was going to kill all the agents in the place and Ava told him it was suicide. She said she would mindwarp him to make him stop, but before she could, Rath slammed his fist into her jaw and knocked her unconscious. Then, he took off into the compound, ready to kill any agent he saw.

Viceroy stared Max down and finally conceded that Max had won this battle. Viceroy would let Max and his friends go, but if one word of the Special Unit ever got out to the general public, then Max’s parents would disappear. Forever.

About ready to leave the Special Unit, Max suddenly heard Michael’s screams coming from the other side of the hallway. No, he realized. It was Rath’s screams. Before anyone had any time to react, Rath blasted Viceroy with a gigantic energy burst. At the same time, Viceroy let go a round of bullets and killed Rath.

Chaos broke among the agents, and the Parkers, Evans, and all of Max’s group were forced to retreat into an empty room. As Max shut the door against a still alive Viceroy, he turned to his friends and realized they had all just trapped themselves in the same room where Lonnie’s dead body still remained.

While Liz reassured Mrs. Evans that the dead body was not Isabel, Langley and Max went over their options. Since Rath had destroyed any chance of the Special Unit letting them go, there seemed to no option left. Brain-blasting all the agents with Kyle’s new power was a level of brutality that Max wanted to avoid at all costs.

As Valenti called out that Ava was still alive, Langley and Max looked at one another. If they could boost Ava’s powers, perhaps they could mindwarp their way out of this.

After giving Ava the tough news that her Michael--Rath--was dead, Ava at first refused to try and mindwarp all the Special Unit agents. She said there were no way to get past their tinfoil caps. But after Langley and Max told her there was no other option, she agreed. Clasping hands with Langley, Max, and Liz, the three opened their minds to Kyle and Isabel, who were waiting by the van outside. Perhaps with all their powers combined, they’d be able to succeed.

As the guards managed to break down the door to the room where Max and his friends were hiding, the agents felt a white blast of light engulf them and their minds were suddenly washed with power.
