Chapter Fifteen
City of Industry, California
Viceroy, after having completed a strange autopsy on the Evans girl, is extraordinarily surprised when Max Evans appears in front of the base, completely alone and unarmed. Sending guards to surround Max, Viceroy and Max stare at each other.
After telling Viceroy that he could kill them in a second, Max is told the same thing. Viceroy asks if Max is trying to be heroic and save his parents or if he has come to surrender.
Max says he has come for neither. He has come to make Viceroy an offer. An offer than he can’t refuse.
Meanwhile, Valenti is waiting outside the compound with Duff, Langley, and Liz. Worried about their plan and whether or not it is succeeding, Valenti is relieved when Kyle, with Isabel’s help, brings him into a psychic forum. Through Kyle and Isabel’s powers, Valenti is able to see events as Max sees them. He sees two agents talking to Max in a interrogating room.
Then, Kyle switches from Max to Michael and Valenti can see Michael crawling through the ventilation system of the Unit’s base. In fact, Valenti realizes, he can see all three scenes at once: Max, Michael, and himself. Feeling a little nausea from the triple vision, Valenti tells his son that he is probably better off with his own two eyes.
As Valenti is dropped from the psychic connection, he worries about what kind of alien powers he might develop in the future. Despite the fact that he is past maturity, he really has no idea what will happen.
Kyle’s voice breaks him from his thoughts. Kyle tells them psychically that the Special Unit agents are not buying what Max is suggesting. The group quickly realizes that they’ll have to put their plan into full action--and quick.
Out of sight, Rath and Ava crouch behind a dumpster watching a group of people, all dressed in black. Discussing whether or not these people are friends or foes, they come to the conclusion that they must be friends. After all, they are sneaking into the base.
Rath suggests they follow the man who had gone off alone--the one who had entered the ventilation system. Ava agrees but points out that they have no idea where he is. Then, suddenly, Rath has a telepathic connection and for a moment he is the man in the ventilation system. And he feels a strong resemblance to the man.
Once back to himself again, Rath wastes no time wondering where that connction came from or why that person felt so familiar. Grabbing Ava’s arm, he takes off in a direction he is sure is the right direction. His complete attention is on saving Lonnie.
