Chapter Eighteen
Maria was going insane waiting outside the van as lookout. She knew that Kyle’s psychic link was silenced, but she didn’t know what that meant. Running back to the van, Maria saw Isabel, looking completely exhausted, resting in Jesse’s arms. Shelby was off to the side, asleep as well. But it was Kyle that looked to be in terrible condition. Whatever the aliens had done to mindwarp the agents had taken a lot out of him.
Unsure of whether the mindwarp had even worked, Maria decided she couldn’t sit around and do nothing any longer. Grabbing a gun from the van, she ran towards the Special Unit base. All the media vans were leaving. She didn’t know if it was because the aliens inside them had realized the threat to the Antarians was gone, or because they feared for their own safety.
To Maria’s relief, she saw a group of familiar people begin to leave the base. Max, Liz, Duff, Langley, Valenti, the Evans, the Parkers, Ava, and an unconsciousness Michael all joined Maria just outside the van.
The agents inside the base were all currently in a mindwarp sleep. When they woke, they would do as their hypnosis told them: destroy all the files and forget all about Roswell.
Unsure of what was wrong with Michael, Max was afraid to try and heal him. Maria, tearful, leaned down to kiss her boyfriend, and to everyone’s surprise, Michael sat up. Apparently Maria’s lip gloss acted as a smelling salt.
The teens’ troubles weren’t over yet. Valenti emerged from the van, his eyes focused on Max. Something was terribly wrong with Kyle.
Climbing into the van, Isabel tried to dreamwalk Kyle and discover the source of his comatose-like state. She wasn’t able to figure anything out. Max, taking a risk of healing something he didn’t understand, placed his hand on Kyle’s forehead and tried to heal him.
Soon after, Kyle came back to life, his normal joking self. Liz made the suggestion that perhaps the gigantic mindwarping had wiped the alien powers from herself and Kyle. Putting this theory to the test, they both found that they could no longer use their powers.
Not sure of what that meant, all the teens were happy to just be alive. As Duff began making arrangements to take people home, Langley drove up in a limousine to where the group was. He rolled down the window, revealing Ava beside him. Calling Michael over, he offered to help Michael get a career as an actor. He looked an awful lot like David Duchovny, after all.
Despite Michael’s obvious surprise and intrigue with Langley’s suggestion, Maria ushers him back into the van. And the group of teenagers all take off for Roswell, New Mexico.
